The alleyways of the old town of Khiva resemble a movie set. Mosques, palaces, madrasas and mausoleums, decorated all over with handmade tiles and ornaments. Archaeologists believe that Khiva was founded in the 5th or 4th century BC. The city was once an important trading center and hub on the Silk Road.
